Right of Way Spraying

We use a glyphosate-based herbicide call Accord, essentially a version of Roundup. It is applied in low-volume (less than 15 gallons per acre) directly to the leaves of saplings growing in the ROW. It is not poisonous or caustic but a new generation of herbicide.

The spray has a surfactant (soapy substance), so it adheres to and is absorbed into the leaves. It then travels to the root of the sapling where the glyphosate prevents the root from absorbing nutrients. Basically, it works with the plants internal process, causing it to starve and die, including the root.

This process allows a ROW to be converted to a meadow-type habitat with low growing plants, flowers and ferns.

For those that are concerned, glyphosate is approved for use in fish ponds to combat invasive aquatic plants. It is safe for use around mammal, birds and fish. It has an opposite charge as soil, so it will not leach as it bonds to the surface of the soil.

Some members will not like the use of a glyphosate-based herbicide because Monsanto (the maker of Roundup) has developed genetically modified organism (GMO) food plants that are resistant to Roundup which allow the entire field to be sprayed and only the weeds will be killed. Some people object to the GMO food rather than the herbicide being used to control weeds.
